Dragon Boat Races

World Dragons Dragon Boat Team will be competing Saturday, June 13, 2009 in St. Charles, Illinois.

Our Rotary-EWB team  had a blast last year with members and friends from Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club and Engineers Without Borders-Chicago Chapter.  It is an all-day commitment from 8am to 6pm at the race site on the Fox River in St. Charles.   Paddlers should be fit.  No experience is necessary.

We race 3 times over a 500-meter course in a 40-foot dragon boat imported from Taiwan.  It has been the number one sport of China for over 2000 years. WE are the power, paddling with canoe paddles on the left or right side of the boat, as we sit in pairs, 20 of us, with our  lean and mean drummer in the front beating the stroke rhythm.  The race lasts 1 ½ minutes.  We race 3 times during the day and our racing time is not known to us ahead of time so we stay the day, hanging out under the trees in the city park.  AJ of EWB throws a team party. Bring your swim wear as he has a pool in his backyard.

Last year we won the Lizard Division.  We rock! This year we expect the core crew and a few more who want to try out the sport.  The cost of $36 per person includes registration and a World Dragons T-shirt.   To hold a seat on the team write the check payable to Mississippi River Adventures, Inc.  and mail asap to Sue Smith, 1501 Greenleaf #2, Evanston, Illinois  60202.
